HOW DID MACEDAY LAKE GET ITS NAME?

By: Stephen Cross
“Maceday Lake” has a curious origin for its name. Maceday Lake was named for Mason “Mace” Day, who was seen fishing on the lake so often that the residents of the area began referring to the lake as Mace Day Lake. Mason Day, called “Mace” for short, kept a livery stable in Pontiac. He was a great hunter and fisherman. Mace Day was also fond of his rations of the extract of rye. Whenever he felt a spree from the extract beginning or was caught with a desire to go on a hunting or fishing excursion, he almost invariably went to the shore of the lake which bears his name to engage in his favorite pastimes. On these occasions he provided himself with provisions and camped on the lakeshore, staying sometimes for several months.
